6 Attractive Sites in Accra You Must Experience

The list of Accra’s attractive sites can be very long and trust me, you’ll always wish you could go back to those venues. For locals, most of these places are seen most often. The same cannot be said for tourists. If you need a guide on some of the attractive sites in Accra, this is your gist. These are places you’ll love dearly in Accra;

  1. JAMES FORT PRISON: The Fort of James is in James Town, a suburb of Accra. It was from this fort that the town got its name. It was built by the British in 1673 and until 2008, was used as a prison.

2. JAMES TOWN LIGHTHOUSE: Built in the 1930s, the James Town lighthouse gives you a perfect aerial view of the fishing community. In actual fact, the James Town lighthouse hasn’t gained accreditation as a tourist site, but you will love it here if adventure is what you seek.

3. CHRISTIANBORG CASTLE: Popularly known as the Osu Castle, the Christianborg Castle was built in the 1660s by the Danes of Denmark. The castle until 2013 served as the seat of government for Ghana. Currently, it serves as a mausoleum and ministerial offices for some newly created ministries in Ghana.

4. THE BLACK STAR SQUARE: Boarded by the Accra Sports Stadium and the Atlantic Ocean, the Black Star Square, also known as the Independence Square serves as the site for holding Ghana’s independence parades. It also hosts some of the nation’s special events. It is a spacious environment with remarkable independence arch and the black star gate.

5. THE JUBILEE HOUSE: Until recently it was known as the Flagstaff house. It was reconstructed in 2009 by former President John Agyekum Kuffuor to serve as the seat of government but was rejected by the Atta Mill’s administration. In 2013, it became the official seat of government. It is the current residence and presidential office of the president of Ghana.

6. KWAME NKRUMAH MAUSOLEUM: It is not far from the central business district of Accra.it is the official mausoleum built in honour of the first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. It houses the remains of the first president and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.it also has some personal belongings of the president. The memorial park is also a perfect ground for your social events. Aside from that, there are a number of statues and water fountains.
